Bobby Shimabukuro
Licensed Clinical Social Worker
Bio
I take an approach to therapy that is caring, thoughtful and gentle to the person and their concerns and issues. I focus my attention to understanding a person’s experiences and underlying needs. Often times we can feel stuck in figuring out how to solve or manage a problem that seems to keep coming up in our lives. We can feel disconnected or struggle to find meaning.
I believe how we view and interact with the world and those around us is shaped by our life experiences and the interplay with our biology. This can impact, or be engrained, in our mood, the way we feel in relationships, or how we feel and function in the workplace and everyday life. I enjoy working alongside people to help gain perspective and clarity around reasons we might have certain emotions, thought processes, or self-concepts.
I have been trained in utilizing various therapeutic techniques through experiences working in psychiatric and correctional settings with both adolescents and adults. I mostly use cognitive approaches of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy. I value mindfulness practices and a holistic approach. I work through a lens of trauma-informed care, cultural competence, person-in-environment perspective, and self-determination theory. I believe in practicing to fidelity and individualizing approaches to a person’s strengths and pace.
